The Sooner You Get Unpacked and Organized, the Sooner You Will Begin to Feel Settled In.

In our move management experience we have never had a customer say, “I wish I hadn’t done this (moved).” In fact, our experience shows that if the right kind of support is in place throughout most, if not all of the downsizing process, the transition will not only progress at a smooth pace, it will also finish on a positive and encouraging note.

We delight in seeing our customers through to the end of their downsizing move. They are not quite sure what to think when we inform them that getting settled in takes far less time than the time and energy they’ve already spent preparing for the move. This is good news as there is an end in sight!

Here are a few thoughts and suggestions regarding moving in and getting settled.

• Assign one or two people the task of directing the movers as they unload the truck. Boxes should be clearly marked as to their room destination and having a floor plan on hand showing the placement of furniture is most important to everyone involved at this stage. Movers appreciate forethought in regard to furniture placement and best of all it keeps the unloading process moving at a quick pace. (You should never have to pay movers to stand idle while they wait for you to make decisions. Be prepared, time = money.)

• Based on necessity, prioritize the rooms to be unpacked and organized. Your schedule and physical stamina will likely play a big part in getting your household completely put together. If you do not have help, try to keep from over extending yourself both physically and emotionally. Instead, do what you can then stop and begin again when you feel refreshed and ready. It’s important not to become overwhelmed with this task or you may start second-guessing your downsizing move decision. Get help if you need it and try to get settled in as quickly as possible.

• Even though you may have done your very best at paring down your belongings before the move, don’t be surprised if you end up with more than you can comfortably live with or manage. This is not uncommon. The decision is yours, but our recommendation is to pare-down again if things are not “fitting” together as planned or you’re feeling a bit overcrowded. Ask yourself, “Now that I’m/we’re moved, what things are most important to me/us? What do I/we really need to live clutter-free and comfortable?” Finding a good balance between our living space and our personal belongings is very important.
